I'm Che, an Ohio based experimental mixed media artistβ¦
I firmly believe that the time and space in which we're all existing is deeply complex and embodies an uncanny vastness beyond our own comprehension. I also believe that our creativity is the most useful tool in exploring and understanding our own existence.
It is for that exact reason that I do not believe in limitations of art or artists-- exploration of any and all mediums and content should be encouraged and censorship abandoned. While I may tend to focus on multimedia projects in video, animation, digital illustration, audio, and photo, my roots were originally planted firmly in more traditional means and methods, including painting, film photography, ceramics, and classical music.
Several of the short films and pieces of traditional media I've created have been curated into local programming such as The Columbus Moving Image Art Review, and the Columbus College of Art & Design's Chroma Student Exhibition, as well as several other local galleries, festivals, and exhibitions. Currently, I've turned to focusing on audio based projects, as well as found footage collage editing.
While creating is one of my greatest passions, research and preservation are closely tied.
In my final semesters earning my Undergraduate Degree from The Ohio State University in Film History and Theory, I worked on a still growing research paper which examined the significance of audience subjection to violence in non-fiction media, with a direct focus on the significance of the growing popularity of True Crime media.
While in attendance at OSU I worked closely as a a Program Assistant Intern with The Columbus Black International Film Festival, as well as a Research Assistant in The Ohio State Library Audio and Visual Archives.
The themes I enjoy exploring in my art are both those of my personal identity, such as queerness, race, disability, and gender; as well as that of our larger identities within our time and space, such as violence, history, politics, and religion. All of my work plays with loose definitions of both Documentary and Experimentalism.
Some how you've ended up here, and for that, I am appreciative that our paths have crossed. I hope you find something of meaning here.
